It was so much fun having Curtis McMurtry on the podcast this week. Curtis comes from a line of very creative people. It was so interesting to talk with him about growing up in an environment  where creativity was encouraged. We also talk about his musical beginnings and his songwriting process. Curtis is a wonderful songwriter and musician and his records are a must for any collection.

Matt Cartsonis Interview

Matt Cartsonis is a great preserver of traditional American music. Matt has led an extraordinary musical life. He has played with Pete Seeger, John McEuen, Warren Zevon and many others. I first saw Matt at Music City Roots in Nashville where he was a part of a special show to celebrate John McEuen’s 70th birthday. Little did I know I would then see him again in Nashville, this time getting to meet he and John backstage. That backstage meeting led to this interview.  Matt has done so much for the music community and it was an honor to get to talk with him.

Jacob Panic Interview

I first saw Jacob Panic at City Winery in Nashville, TN when he was playing with the Danny Burns Band. Jacob gets such a unique sound out of his banjo that is all his own. When you hear Jacob play you will hear a combination of melodic and three finger playing.The songs on his new record are a mixture of great banjo playing and Rock sensibilities. In this interview we talk about Jacob’s musical beginnings, influences, and his new record.

Tom Gray Interview

Tom Gray was a part of two of the most important bluegrass bands in history. The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene brought a unique sound to bluegrass music in the 70s and 80s that is still having an impact on the music today. In this interview we talk about Tom’s musical beginnings, musical influences, and bluegrass in the Washington D.C area.

Sean Watkins Interview

It was a huge honor to talk with Sean Watkins. Sean has been one of my favorite musicians ever since I heard Nickel Creek many years ago. Sean is such a prolific songwriter and a world-class instrumentalist. His new solo record What to Fear showcases both of these qualities. I became aware of Jeff Scroggins when I read a feature article about him in Banjo Newsletter.
